A First in Canadian universities
Concordia University is the first Canadian university to adopt the 1% proposal.
Concordia University students for voted in favour of the 1% campaign during last week’s student elections. With the 1% proposal, students will now pay 75 cents per course towards a Sustainability Action Fund, with the aim of making Concordia the most sustainable university in Canada.
Concordia is not only concerned with promoting sustainable development within the university, but also with teaching it to future generations. This initiative is part of an environmental focus that includes the R4 Compost Project that was highlighted by the city of Montreal for its leadership role in the first phase of Montreal’s strategic plan for sustainable development.
The Youth Action Montreal, a Concordia initiated student group also hosted the first Youth Summit on Climate Change with keynote speakers Dr. David Suzuki and former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore, who accepted an honorary doctorate from Concordia following the event.
