Scientific research and the military
“The objectives of Science for Peace are charitable: research and education for peace in the broadest sense. This implies: to sustain life, and to prevent the horrors of armed conflict, especially with weapons of mass destruction, and ultimately to abolish the institution of war…scientific research should be aimed to create basic knowledge and to improve the welfare of the human population and the Earth’s environment. Scientific research with military purposes is in open contradiction to these goals, since it is aimed at developing new weapons that in the best case will not be used, and in the worst case will be tools of destruction. R+D with military purposes has no direct social usefulness, it promotes wars and arms races, and it consumes resources at the expense of non-military scientific research.”
